Janjaap Ruijssenaars Magnetic Floating Bed

You would have seen plenty of inflatable floating beds that float on water. But have you seen a bed that floats in the air? The magnetic floating bed is such a bed that actually floats in the air. It’s made using large permanently opposing industrial-strength magnets fixed inside the floating bed and on the ground below it. The opposing magnetic forces make the bed float around 1.3 feet off the floor and held in place by 4 very thin wires. The magnetic power of the beds magnets are permanent and no energy has to be added after installation.

The floating bed is able to hold up to 900kg (2,000 lbs), which is more than the weight of a small car. The price of it is reportedly US $1.6 million, which makes it one of the world’s most expensive beds. But you can get a smaller floating bed, one fifth of the full size at a cost of US $153,000!

Here is a video interview with the inventor of this bed.

This magnetic bed is an invention by Dutch architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars of Universe Architecture firm in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Bakker Magnetics, a specialist firm in development and production of magnetic solutions collaborated in the production. They had worked for 6 years on the technology and techniques needed to finally produce the floating beds.

The bed was first unveiled to the world at the 2006 Millionaire Fair in Kortrijk, Belgium. Subsequently it became famous as Janjaap Ruijssenaars magnetic floating bed. TIMES Magazine selected the Floating Bed as one of the Best Inventions of 2006 along with the i-Pad, YouTube and NASA´s Ares Rocket.floating magnetic bed

Mr. Janjaap and Universe Architecture intend to develop and sell only a limited number of unique custom made floating beds per Country.
